The Triad of Facial Aging

Facial aging is not a uniform phenomenon, but is actually composed of three different phenomena that work together to produce the various symptoms of aging. These three phenomena, changes in the skin, loss of facial volume, and sagging tissue, all conspire to create the aged face.

Changes in the Skin

Your skin is a remarkable organ. Not only is it the largest organ in the body, but it also one of the most quickly regenerating organs in the body. Skin cells are shed and replaced regularly. However, this process of sloughing and renewal slows with age. When we are young it may be 14 days. For people aged 50 or older, that period can slow to 37 days. This gives your skin more than twice as long to be exposed to environmental contaminants and ultraviolet radiation, which can make it dull and dry.

In addition, your skin contains less collagen and elastin, two proteins that help the skin maintain its elasticity.

Loss of Facial Volume

Young faces are chubby faces. Think of the baby face as the extreme, but even young adults retain a great deal of fat, especially in their cheeks. This is especially true of women, and essential to the creation of the heart-shaped face that many consider to be the feminine ideal. However, as we age, the body tends to shift the locations where it stores fat, generally moving it away from the face. The loss of facial fat can lead to the appearance of sunken cheeks and hollows under the eyes, forming shadows that give the appearance of permanent bags under the eyes.

Sagging Tissues

Another effect of age is the result of gravity's constant pull on the tissues of the face. Over time, these tissues will begin to sag, especially as changes in the skin decrease the skin's ability to support itself and other tissues. Once these tissues become displaced, they leave hollows behind, accentuating the problem of facial volume loss, and inverting the overall shape of the face from narrow at the bottom and wide at the top to wide at the bottom and narrow at the top.

Fight the Foes One at a Time

Currently, there is no one treatment that simultaneously reverses all three aspects of facial aging at the same time. However, there exist good treatments for each aspect individually. Skin changes can be combated using advanced skin care. The loss of facial volume can be headed off with regular treatment using temporary facial fillers. Finally, for sagging tissues, there is nothing so effective as a face lift.
